Salon Manchester: Partial Highlights vs T-Section Highlights

Most clients who sit in our chair asking about lighter, brighter hair aren’t sure which highlight package they actually need. And that’s fair enough. The names sound similar. At our salon in Manchester, the two we get asked to compare most are partial highlights and T-section highlights, so let’s clear up the difference once and for all.

Here at David Rozman, we colour real heads of hair every day, and choosing between these two comes down to where you want the brightness and how much you want to spend. Get it right and you’ll walk out with exactly the look you pictured. Get it wrong and you’ve paid for foils you can’t even see.

How partial and T-section highlights work

A T-section highlight does exactly what the name suggests. We foil the top section and the parting, forming a rough “T” shape across the crown. It’s the fastest way to lift the bits that frame your face and catch the light first.

Partial highlights go a step further. We work through the top, the parting and the sides, roughly the upper half of the head, so the brightness carries around the face rather than just sitting on top. Both use a lightener wrapped in foils, similar to what you’d see explained on the Wella Professionals education pages. The bond care we layer in, like Olaplex, keeps the hair strong through the lift.

What to expect during and after your appointment

A T-section usually takes 60 to 90 minutes, depending on hair length and thickness. Partial highlights run 90 minutes to two hours. Both include a toner to knock out any brassiness and a blow dry to finish.

Regrowth-wise, because the colour is placed away from a hard line, both grow out softly. Most clients come back every 8 to 12 weeks. If you’re deciding between these and a bigger service, our breakdown of full head versus half head highlights is worth a read before you book.

Choosing the right highlights at our Manchester salon

Honestly, the choice usually sorts itself out once we talk it through. Want a quick lift for the front with minimal fuss and cost? T-section. Want dimension that reads as “highlighted” from every angle without committing to a full head? Partial. That’s the shortcut.

The thing most people miss is that a good colour consultation saves money. We’ll tell you honestly if a T-section will give you the effect you’re after or if it’ll leave the sides looking flat. If you’re softening greys rather than going brighter, our grey blending approach might suit you better. And if your natural base needs prep first, we’ll flag it during your consultation.

We’ve built our reputation on getting this stuff right the first time. You can read what clients say on our reviews page, or see finished work in the lookbook. Our colour team keeps up with technique through the NHBF, so you’re in trained hands.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is a T-section cheaper than partial highlights?

Yes. A T-section uses fewer foils and less time, so it’s the more affordable option. It focuses lift on the parting and crown, making it ideal if you mainly want brightness where the light hits first.

Can I upgrade from T-section to partial later?

Absolutely. Many clients start with a T-section, then add sides at the next visit if they want more dimension. We keep a record of your formula, so building up gradually is easy and consistent each time.

How long do these highlights last?

Because there’s no hard regrowth line, both soften as they grow. Most clients rebook every 8 to 12 weeks. A toner refresh in between keeps blondes from turning brassy and stretches the time between full appointments.
