We managed to get a few minutes with our very busy Colour Director, Guy, to ask him some quick-fire questions all about hair colour. Guy is our colour maestro at David Rozman and he is here to tell us all about caring for coloured hair.
How long have you been hairdressing?
Since I left school (showing my age now) around 19 years!
What is the most requested hair colour in the salon?
It varies depending on hair trends, at the moment it is definitely Balayage, various tones of the colouring technique.
How do you keep coloured hair from going dry?
It totally depends on the hair texture. As a general rule I would suggest using a specialist colour shampoo and conditioner, I love our Pureology Hydrate range. I would also advise on using a masque at home once a week, this one by Alterna is great for penetrating moisture into the hair.
Lastly heat takes colour out of the hair, so make sure you are using a heat protection spray (like Alterna Heat Protection Spray) when using hairdryer, straighteners etc.
How can I keep colour fresh?
All of the above tips will definitely help. Also going to your hairdresser for a gloss every 4-6 weeks (depending on what colour your hair is and how often you have it coloured). A gloss deposits a hint of colour into the hair and also adds protein which is vital for keeping your style fresh.
How do you decide which hair colour suits a client?
I always look at skin tone and eye colour. I love warm copper tones on clients with green eyes, really helps enhance the skin tone and makes the eyes pop.
What is the hardest colour to maintain?
Some of the new hair colour trends are hard to maintain, such as greys and Blorange. I would say the most common hair colour that is hard to maintain is platinum blonde, it needs constant treatments and refreshing to stop the colour fading and looking dull.
